BRAZILIAN LEMONADE RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium, thin-skinned limes

  • 4 cups ice

  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

  • 4 cups very cold water

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (optional, for extra sweetness - adjust to taste)

  • Sliced limes and fresh mint sprigs, for garnish

Equipment:

  • Blender

  • Fine-mesh sieve

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Limes: Wash the limes thoroughly. Cut off and discard the woody ends. Slice each lime into quarters. There's no need to peel them, but removing any accessible seeds is helpful.

  2. Blend Limes & Water: Place the lime quarters in the blender and add the cold water. Blend for only 10-15 seconds. Be careful not to blend for too long, or the pith will start to make the lemonade bitter. You want to roughly chop the limes and extract the juice, but not pulverize them.

  3. Strain the Mixture: Pour the blended lime and water mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher. Use the back of a spoon to press as much liquid as possible out of the lime solids. Discard the pulp left in the sieve.

  4. Combine with Sweeteners & Ice: Rinse out the blender jar quickly to remove any lingering pulp. Pour the strained lime mixture back into the blender. Add the ice and the entire can of sweetened condensed milk. If you're using granulated sugar, add that now as well.

  5. Blend Until Smooth & Frothy: Blend everything together on high speed until the ice is completely crushed and the mixture is very smooth and has a beautiful, thick, and frothy foam on top.

  6. Serve Immediately: Pour the Brazilian Lemonade into glasses filled with a little more fresh ice, if desired. Garnish each glass with a slice of lime and a sprig of fresh mint. This drink is best enjoyed immediately for the most refreshing texture and flavor.

Variations:

  • Add Mint: Blend a few fresh mint leaves with the ice and condensed milk for a zesty, minty twist.

  • Make it Adult: For an adult version, add a shot of cachaça (a Brazilian sugar cane spirit) or vodka to each glass before serving.

  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a thin slice of jalapeño to the blender with the limes for a subtle, unexpected heat.
